Searching for the reality and spirituality is something and attempting for your life and responsibilities is something else and I don’t think one must be scarified for another. As is, I’d give it 4. Scott Fitzgerald’s book was a mirror Americans recognized themselves in. The Great Gatsby, on the other hand, didn’t become popular until after Fitzgerald’s death. It is an expression of the mastery Maugham earned through many long years of novel-writing and mostly successful critical reception of his work that this book, which came almost twenty years into a career of more than forty years, feels as fresh as his first book The Moon and Sixpence.

In war hero Larry Laurence Darrell returns to w.sometset hometown of Chicago, wounded twice, the brave aviator, has a deeper injury which changes him considerably. I was a little conflicted about the wise Indian sages in the book and the didactic nature of the last few chapters, but it was still a pleasant and inspiring read.

Stylistically, Maugham employs a very innovative approach – rather than focusing on the changes that occur directly in Darrell’s life, the narrative follows how others react to Larry’s continual tranformation.
