It starts a bit dark with our two leads having been kidnapped and placed into a cell on a spaceship. On the whole I enjoyed this sci fi romance. Both Safan and Maurra are strong characters who are willing to sacrifice themselves to save innocent lives. The whole idea of no cross species sex was just dropped even though the reason for the ban was not solved in any manner.
There was a decent attempt at world building. This was my first read by Linda Mooney, and I had no qualms with her style. No effort made to convince me any thought had been put into how ships would move through space with or without FTL.
A trap is set for these two as revenge and as a money-making scheme by a convict whom Maurra had caught. Their captor demands that they have intercourse while being recorded so that he can broadcast to paying “customers”, if they don’t he will kill the Ellinod and bring in a less humanoid creature to fornicate with Maurra. Contains moral degradation, public sex, self sacrifice, unexpected tenderness, sadistic little aliens, banishment, exorbitant Pay Per View charges, and sweet revenge served cold. She discovers that the alien, Safan, was also kidnapped and is held in the cell next to hers.
I think the author actually meant sociopathic. I thought it was cute that they were going to be bounty hunters. This book did that for me. And we knew little to nothing about Safan except what a kind and caring and self-sacrificing male he was til much later in the book,I mean it’s not til the very end we even learn he has a last name then find out this odd quirk that in order to be in law enforcement you have to be wealthy? I really liked the horns especially since they were an erotic zone for him.
This was my first read by Linda Mooney, and I had no qualms with her style.
Because of his size, this truly could have been a horrible experience for her, but he made sure to keep her sexually aroused so that she wouldn’t be torn apart by him. Not an easy feat for any author, yet Linda Mooney did an excellent job especially when one of the characters is an alien with horns.
Instead of a rational number of star systems, there llnda references to galaxies which would just be too unwieldy for any empire to rule or govern or police. For example it could have been worded so that any “willful attempt” to conceive and conceal a hybrid surrendeer was punishable. Attempts to deal with an abruptly changed life despite having been stripped of her special status as a galactic enforcer thrusts Maurra in the midst of a prison riot and she and Safan abruptly decide to go after the perpetrator of their downfall.
But when I read a book about hot alien sex, I’m satisfied with the focus on the down and dirty.
Their partnership will require considerable adjustment and an identification of common goals before they can consider any kind of life together but external forces may be more than they can overcome. Maurra, our heroine, is a intergalactic cop with psi abilities who happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time And we definitely get that It was different than the usual sci-fi romance in that both the main characters were captive, when usually it’s the woman abducted by the alien and then falls in love with him.
